REVENUE

Sales and payment history is still migrating for all Lulu sales prior to April 25th; it is an ongoing process and should be finished and available in your account by the end of next week. ALL revenue payments are still being paid out accurately and on time.

FILE UPLOAD ISSUES

Some of you are experiencing issues while uploading your new project files, including normalizing your PDF files. We are investigating some possible causes, but we also need to stress how important it is to review our file specifications and adhere to these guidelines when creating your book. For more information on file specifications and guidelines, use our Publishing Toolkit: https://www.lulu.com/publishing-toolkit

RETAIL PRICING ISSUES

Some projects experienced a price change during our update. This was unintended and we are working on correcting this error.

We are committed to resolving these issues as quickly and thoroughly as we can. We understand your frustration, and appreciate your continued patience and support while we work through these remaining issues. Please continue to report any issues you experience that are not mentioned above so that we can work to diagnose the problem and find a resolution on a case-by-case basis.

  • Daniel Humbert Since we have to download the book in PDF format, there are always errors. The old site was simpler, we downloaded a word file ... It's a shame because you will lose many customers. You have to go back to the simplicity of the old site to publish books. I’ve been trying for days and it’s not working.
    • Andrew Flindall To be fair to Lulu - if it's tricky for us to produce a PDF, what's it like for them having to create PDFs from whatever ancient versions of Word or Word-clones that thousands of us using. It's actually quite a sensible business decision on their part to make us responsible for the print-ready PDF.
    • Myra Singleton Johnson Andrew Flindall I have always uploaded a print ready PDF of my books. My issue with them now is I can't even log in and review my projects, or my account on any level. Been trying to get response for several days now.
    • Andrew Flindall Me too, but it looks like a lot of people don't. I can understand why Lulu don't want the chore or responsibility of converting whatever's thrown at them. Beyond the time it's taking, the biggest gripe is that they should have given more notice of what was being lost.

I had the login issue as well, but a password reset sorted it. I actually reset using my original password so nothing has changed.

  • Kenneth J Kerr How are we supposed to trust you when you tell us everything is being fixed, and yet you still remove previous posts showing how many people are experiencing the negative impact of your tsunami of change? Many of us who have trusted you for more than a decade have completely lost trust in you.
    • Gurki Bär These are quite correct considerations. Of course, the marketing department formulates it a little more beautifully. But if the opposite is always written than of what the business partners (we) experience, then trust really does dwindle. The question of mistrust has already been discussed in the Lulu forum for three weeks. (And: people from Lulu regularly read about it there - so they know exactly, what happens.) https://lulu.boards.net/thread/218/mistrust

  • Eden Jameson Gravis I used your form twice and gave it over the requested 48 hours each time. I sent a report request and responded to the automated email (it's the second report request I had sent fyi). Gave that 48 hours as well. No responses. No fixes. I filed a complaint with the BBB today. I'm not asking a lot I just want my stuff fixed. I've never had to do that before. It was an absolute last resort before I jump ship altogether.

  • Arabella Beatrix Fae Stevenson My book that has in distribution for a few months, is missing interior files (still) and says "distribution review pending". It's already on Amazon and Barnes & Nobel. Plus, when I try to revise a project; it shows that I upload a file, but at the end it acts like I didn't change anything and sends me back to my projects.
    • Shawn McHatton Arabella Beatrix Fae Stevenson one of my books is also listed as pending but seems to be available. I’ve had an unanswered ticket open for about a month.
    • Jyl Anais Mine has been in "distribution review pending" for months and is not showing up in Amazon searches. I am so disappointed in Lulu.
    • David Morris Jyl Anais Same here. But a customer bought a copy of the title on Amazon and it was obviously produced by Lulu from the book size.
    • Jyl Anais That's great. I'm happy for you, but it doesn't answer my question. I asked them to resolve this months ago and they didn't then. It's still a problem.
    • David Morris Jyl Anais And unlikely they will any time soon.

  • Penny Luker I am so disappointed with Lulu. You had a user friendly system. I’ve been using Lulu for years. Your new system is for printing experts. I have wasted so much time trying to upload a book.
If the intention is that we will buy more services from your e
xperts you may also be disappointed as most indies don’t make heaps of money. I converted file to pdf and have now been told the borders are wrong and it may have transparencies which need to be flattened. It’s got no images or pictures. 😬 I am reading your 24 page guide, but to be honest I’m not sure I can be bothered.
    • Andrew Flindall Most of the 'warnings' I've had were advisories rather than showstoppers. I've ignored them, knowing that all my images are 300dpi and I have flattened everything. I've had a couple of proofs of post-update projects and not noticed anything untoward.

    • Penny Luker Andrew thank you. I thought I’d ignore it and carry on but it seems to be blocking me. I’ll go back and check the borders and try one more time. If it works fine, if not then I’ll just ebook on Amazon.
    • Andrew Flindall I suppose it might be different if you're using the distribution channel. Everything I've done so far has been 'private' so the standards might not be enforced to the same degree.
    • Penny Luker Perhaps.

  • Gary Hill Just an update. I managed to get a support chat done today. I had basically four issues. Two were resolved - or at least are on the road to being resolved. The other two are permanent changes that I'm not happy about, but will have to live with - despite the extensive investment in time and the wasted business cards (since the address change on my spotlight is permanent rendering boxes of cards worthless).
    • Myra Singleton Johnson What??? My spotlight address is on all my business cards as well. But, I can't even log into my account to check things out.
    • John Lyon Myra Singleton Johnson if you have changed your password as Lulu suggested - I don't know why that would make a difference and it's probably rubbish - it appears to be necessary to wait a few seconds after entering your login credentials before hitting return. I wait until the little red notice that username is required, after which it logs me in without fail. Good luck!
      • 22 Std.
    • Gary Hill If you have your password saved, as I do, I have found that if it autofills you have to actually click on both the email address field and the password field or it will error out.

As to the Spotlight, if your spotlight includes /spotlight/ it should still work. The older ones that don't include that no longer work.

    • Alana Nana Wood Darren Lamb I have the same issue
    • Michael Bell Ditto - I can upload as a new project but not as a revision to an existing project. So it is not the file itself.

  • Myra Singleton Johnson Today I can't even sign in! 4 books are still missing off the Bookstore list. Can't access my account at all!
    • Eliot M. Camarena When your books return check the retail price. All the books I had that were missing were returned with ridiculously low, arbitrary retail prices - putting me in the weird position of hoping nobody buys those books.
To change the book price back to wha
t it was requires an ENTIRE revision of the WHOLE book - and then we must PURCHASE of a proof copy to make sure the revision worked with this new set-up.
We have to pay money to fix lulu's mistake!
That's rubbing salt in the wound. I hope they allow us to get a free proof if we revised a project because of their error.
Best of luck to you with your projects, Myra Singleton Johnson!
    • Myra Singleton Johnson I have tried NUMEROUS times to reach support and continue to send in requests. All I get is an automatic response and I STILL CAN'T EVEN GET TO MY ACCOUNT. I get a message saying I am "already logged in" but all I get is the main Lulu page and can't navigate to any of my data.

  • Daniel Platt Your email to me said "Lulu Accounts are not able to be canceled by the account holder at this time. Our team is working on adding the functionality.

This case will now be marked as resolved. However, if your question or issue is not answered with thi
s update, please reply to this email to reopen your case." Of course, the return email address is noreply@lulu.com, so that probably isn't very good advice. And I know that I can't cancel my own account on your website, because I can't do anything at all on your website. Your website is 100% dysfunctional. I am asking YOU to cancel my account for me, for reasons which ought to be pretty obvious by now.
  • Aquill Relle So tell me, Lulu, how do I log out from my account when there is no log-out/sign-out button? Until now all my emails to support hit a brick wall. Your site is going to die if you continue this way.
  • Rob Sinnott Your "15OFF" code does NOT work. You are east coast time zone. It is not over until 11:59 tonight there. What gives? Cancelling order. I suppose I'll get an earful tomorrow from customers unable to use this code I sent them earlier. Yes, I know, you won't answer me....

  • John Chenery "You Haven't Started Any Projects" - I wonder what I've been doing for the last 3 years. Lulu's checks that the migration has worked is left up to us. This is no way to treat your customers!
  • Carolyn Gage Distressed to hear that all payments are being made on time. This is not true. I have not received any money for Amazon sales, or other outlets. Sounds like Lulu is going to keep that money and tell me that for the first time in over a decade, I have had no sales except from the Lulu website? Also, annoyed to hear "reply to your last email from Lulu." Those emails are "noreply" emails. I am missing money, one title, and have about twenty titles stuck in revision. My Projects is so completely full of bugs I hate to use it. I would need a Chat person to work with me for about three hours to get through all the issues. I'm so disappointed in Lulu. Especially hearing that they have paid me in full. They have NOT.
    • Gurki Bär Carolyn Gage: If I understood it correctly, the payment was made in May according to the old bookkeeping. There should be no problems there. But read the original text here, it seems to be very helpful: https://lulu.boards.net/post/3372/thread

  • John Lyon Time for some honesty, Lulu. No one here is seeing continuous progress with resolving migration issues. Sales and payment data is not "still migrating". After a month, it is still not migrating.

Last week you gave us dates by which various proble
ms would be resolved. How many of those have been achieved? Not data migration by today, for sure. That's now reset to a vague "end of next week". And does anyone there really expect to achieve that? I doubt it.

And revenue payments? You say you are making payments for all sales after April 25, but why should we believe that? Is it plausible that some freak accident has left you able to make payments perfectly whilst all the rest of your system functionality has collapsed? No. You need to take steps urgently to re-establish authors' confidence in your payments processes. I propose an independent audit of all sales and payments in the periods leading up to and following the failed cut over as soon as is feasible.

Where is Lulu management in all of this? All we get are occasional anonymous, deluded Facebook posts. No opportunity for dialogue or questions; nor any contact with senior management. And as for project and technical management, the only conclusion can be that the same people who failed so completely to plan and execute the system change, and to manage risk, are still sifting through the wreckage.

    Do something constructive now.

  • Diane Simmler I want to change my price. How do I do it?
    • Eliot M. Camarena I asked the Chat Support about that yesterday. To change a price we need to do an entire revision!
Here's what the support person told me:
"At the moment, revising projects is the only way to adjust the price, which would then require purchasing a new
proof copy, since all revisions in distribution have this as a requirement. This is definitely inconvenient, and I do apologize for this."
So we need to revise the project and BUY a proof - even if, as in my case, I need to change the price because Lulu arbitrarily lowered my retail price on several books that they lost then restored. Sent them a detailed objection to Lulu profiting off their website failure. Posted above as a comment.
    • Diane Simmler Eliot M. Camarena this is so bogus. I set the price at a rate to achieve a temporary sale price of $18.20. It's a state studies workbook and our state was established 200 years ago, 1820. The migration got rid of the strikeout and the sale price. Now the retail is higher than I want to sell it for.

  • Steve Sinsabaugh Just published my first book (hardcover, 8.5x11, 738 pages). Just on the Lulu site, like my other books (genealogy-related). The new Lulu website, once it was working, generally was straightforward. Print quality was reasonably good; only two complaints on the proof. First was the packaging - Hardcover corners bent a bit, probably due to shipping (fedex home). For a large hardcover, they should use a more robust box. Second issue was the margins. There was a group of pages where there was a noticeable (almost 1/4”) upward shift of the print on the pages. Not a big issue (no bleeds, and I had sufficient margin), but seems to represent a bit of a quality control issue from the printer in Agawam, Mass.

And so far the only book sales that show up are the various ones I ordered as proofs, etc. Still waiting to see when paid sales show up; expect to see the first of those in next few days.

After all the complaints, I thought it would be worthwhile to share my experience publishing a new book.

    ...

  • Kenneth J Kerr How can we get across to Lulu the true impact of what they have done?

For many years I have been an author. Now I am an author without a book, because I will not even try to use them until there are no further reports of omissions, errors, etc.

An author without a book faces existential, economic, and identity angst.

Lulu has done to their longterm authors exactly what the covid lockdown has done for many businesses. Their changes have shut us down and prevented us from working, or even planning our future.

And instead of admitting they f@@ked up (strongest word to emotionally convey the truth), they try to placate us with nonsense updates that suggest only a few people are having problems.

No Lulu. It is all of us.

We liked being able to upload word files and have your system convert to the correct pdf settings without any frustration.

We liked the ability to control our prices, distribution, status of project, and more.

We liked the way we could revise a product without the demand of ordering a proof for every punctuation change we made.

We liked that you acted as a file storage during those times we upgraded to a new computer.

These have changed, even if you ever get your technical and operational acts together.

These things drew many of us to you, and kept us loyal to you, as customers, partners, and advocates, in my case for 12 years.

But now, I am an author without a book. I am disillusioned by you, disappointed in you, distrusting of you, and disgusted at you.

I am a ship dead in the water. No books to sell because I would not trust you to mail a marketable product to any reader of mine. I am looking at other companies, but feel worn down at the thought of learning new systems, or facing massive upfront costs for each title.

I am even considering giving up the author dream.

And I bet I am not alone in the legion of those authors disrupted by your incompetence.

So, when you feed us puerile attempts at placating us with half truths, please see the true impact of what you have done to the people upon whom your company was built.

I will copy this message and upload it every time you delete the comments from previous updates!
    • Gurki Bär Kenneth J Kerr: No, for God's sake, no! You can't give up writing because of their technical problems!

Other writers and publishers are in the same situation. However, when Lulu wanted to close the forum at the end of 2019, they simply outsourced the
forum and now continue to discuss there independently of Lulu. Nothing is deleted there. I'm linking them to a tread where different alternatives are discussed. https://lulu.boards.net/thread/263/emails-lulu-support

One seems to be particularly good, but requires upset costs. But until June (and then again in winter) it's possible without. I think you'll find helpful information there on how to continue writing and publishing. Even at comparable financial conditions as before.

    • Myra Singleton Johnson I am only months away from finishing another book which I had planned to upload to Lulu. I have used Lulu since 2011, very happily, I might add. BUT NOW!! ………..

  • Eliot M. Camarena Why Must I Pay To Correct Lulu's Mistakes?
    THE PROBLEM
    Please consider this:

I have several projects that I must completely revise now ONLY because Lulu drastically reduced my listed selling price in the migration. That is something Lulu should take responsibility for.

It seems that when a book was "lost" in the upgrade process and Lulu recovered it, you assigned it a new, arbitrary, selling price that is way, way out of line with my original selling price. I am now in the strange position of hoping nobody buys those books.

To fix your pricing mistake, I must submit an entire new project revision. Why can’t we just have a simple button to change a price?

More to the point, with a new revision I will need to buy a proof copy to make sure the new system worked. I don't see why I should have to spend money to fix your mistake - and I certainly cannot do a revision without getting a proof now that the system has been changed. I need to know the book looks all right.

    CUSTOMER GOOD WILL
For the sake of customer goodwill, I think Lulu should provide a free proof copy of a revison – but ONLY if the project had to be revised because of Lulu's error.

That is only fair and equitable.

To make a creator pay for Lulu's mistake is very bad customer relations. It is like rubbing salt in a wound. It looks like Lulu is profiting off of their own carelessness.

I see from this Facebook page that this requirement is indeed making many people angry. We're only talking a few dollars here, and it will go a long way towards creating good will with your users - many of whom now are very upset - as you know.

    PAST EXAMPLES
Twice in the 13 years that I have been using Lulu, something went wrong with the shipping.

One package was lost, another arrived damaged. Lulu IMMEDIATELY sent replacements free of charge.
That was fantastic! And a small gesture like sending a free proof to people who must correct your mistake will repay itself many times over in customer good will.

Again, I hope that you will do this but ONLY in the case of a revision being necessary because of Lulu's mistake.
I will stay with Lulu, but this needs to be addressed.

    • Eliot M. Camarena There was a Beta test. I took part in January and told them that it was not working right so I did my book with the regular site. They need to bring back the old system and call it LULU CLASSIC.
    • Romano Gaspari Eliot M. Camarena I wrote mine years ago and it was pretty easy. Few months ago my girlfriend wrote her first and bought proof copy. I ve made some errors on cover with wizard so want to revise it. Meanwhile site swapping and wizard available no long. I made cover by myself and ordered second proof copy. Could u guess? All preview is ok but I received the same book of the last time. No changes and no updates
    • Eliot M. Camarena Romano Gaspari: no doubt - it's a mess. They need to reactivate the original system and call it LULU CLASSIC.
    • Romano Gaspari Eliot M. Camarena no way... I will try to get refund or a right copy as well but, honestly i m figuring out to swap to Amazon

an easy and hassle-free way to publish. Great people with a great product.
I have used lulu for my book for 10 years and they have done a great job. Customer service has alway...s been a little hard to navigate but via email they do help eventually. The upgrade issue has made things really difficult. I am uploading a new book soon and thinking about Ingram Spark whose customer service is better and site easier to navigate..except they do not let you direct sell the book and won't ship it for you. Everything goes through a middle man (book retailers) Anyone know any other self publisher you can direct sell with? Anyone know how to delete a project? Anyone know if lulu has Spanish translation services? Thanks! Mehr anzeigen
When I tried editing my book it created a thick book, two books in one: one with the first print an...d another one with the editing back to back. Speaking on it is in vain as I have tried to fix this for years. Number two, I am not able to order my own books to take with me to book signing. So all this time I have been loosing money that's since its printing in 2007. To this day July 2018 no one has been able to tell me how I can order my own book.
Sometimes I buy my own book at retail price when co-workers ask for it an with the shipping I make no money at all, just making it available for them...like I said been just losing money all this time. How can I rate it good if I haven't been able to have a single book signing?
Oh and let's not mention all the money I paid 4 years ago $697.00 for global publishing and didn't make a single cent from that to this day. What was the point in that?
Ever seen experiments where animals act with learned helplessness? Well, that's at the point where I'm at. I do nothing all these years because I have learned talking to Lulu doesn't help - it's called "learned helplessness."
